Welcome To 4th Grade!

Dear Parents,

Hello and welcome to 4th Grade! My name is Mr. Adrian Wong and I am pleased to be your child's 4th Grade teacher for the 2021-2022 school year.  I am looking forward to an exciting and successful school year at Gladstone Elementary.  I believe in working hard, being a responsible person and a good citizen.  I hope to encourage your child in their academics throughout the year.  What I've learned over the past 20 years of teaching upper grade is that it is very important to have as much parental involvement in your child's education.  I also believe that when you and I work together, your child will receive the best education possible.

This year will be challenging, yet fun for your child.  I have high expectations for every child.  I believe that children will rise to the expectations around them and since I want them to be successful, my expectations are quite high.  I will encourage your student to work hard to meet their potential.  In order to maintain consistency, I ask that you expect the same from them at home.  I expect all students to use their class time wisely, complete their work on time and turn in all assignments.  I allow plenty of time for students to complete class work, and therefore any incomplete work must be completed as additional homework.

Homework is assigned daily, Monday through Thursday.  During the week you should see your child working on a Reading Log, Reading fluency assignment, Language Arts assignment and Math.  On occasion, you will also see Social Studies and/or Science.  Homework should take an average of 40 minutes each night and will be due the following morning.  Reading 30 minutes every night is also expected.  In 4th Grade students are no longer "learning to read," but "reading to learn."  This becomes very evident as students are expected to read and understand a great deal of non-fiction in the areas of Social Studies and Science.

My goal, along with the staff at Gladstone Elementary, is to provide your child with a strong academic experience that is challenging.  I will focus on organization and responsibility skills, which is essential for the future success of your student.  In order to do this, your child will need some supplies.  I have attached a supply list so you can ensure your child's success this year.

I feel honored for the chance to work with you, your child and the staff at Gladstone Elementary.  My door is always open and I am more than willing to meet or talk with you about any needs or concerns regarding your child.  If you need to contact me, you may: send a note, leave a message in the office, call me at (909) 971-8204, set up an appointment or e-mail me at a.wong@bonita.k12.ca.us .  I will try to get back to you as soon as possible.  Together we can create a partnership, which will benefit your child's success.  Please join me at Back to School Night so you may hear about all the exciting things to come this year.

Sincerely,

 Mr. Wong

Mr. Wong’s Homework Policy

Why is homework important?

Homework allows students to practice skills and reinforce skills they have learned in school.
The homework assignments are also a useful communication tool for parents to see what skills the students are learning in school.
Homework provides practice in a number of 'life-skills' including time management, working independently, being responsible with necessary materials and tools, and problem solving.

When do I assign homework and what kind of homework will be assigned?

Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday.
On most nights, students will be assigned math fact practice, reading fluency practice, math lesson practice and to read independently for 30 minutes.

What are student responsibilities for homework?

Student copy their homework down in their Agenda and Homework Charts.

What are parent responsibilities?

Parents are to sign the homework chart, ONLY AFTER checking that it is completed.
Parents should provide a quiet place to work, supplies needed, and lots of encouragement.
Parents should write a note, email or call me if there’s a problem with the homework.

What if any part of the homework is not done?

Parents will be notified when their child has not completed a homework assignment. If homework is an ongoing issue, we will meet to discuss an action plan.
